This is Huberman's most-repeated advice for a reason. Morning light exposure through your eyes triggers a set of neurons called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. These cells send a signal to your brain's master clock — the suprachiasmatic nucleus — that says "the day has begun."
That signal starts a countdown to melatonin release roughly 14-16 hours later. The earlier and brighter the signal, the earlier you'll feel sleepy at night. On cloudy days, stay outside a bit longer (10–15 minutes). On bright days, 2–5 minutes is enough.
How to do it: Step outside within 30 minutes of waking. Look toward the sky (not directly at the sun) for 2–10 minutes. Don't wear sunglasses. If you can't go outside, a bright light therapy lamp held close to your face is the next best thing.
Protocol 2: Delay caffeine 90–120 minutes
Here's the counterintuitive one: wait 90–120 minutes after waking before your first coffee. Why? Because cortisol naturally rises in the first hour after waking — this is your body's built-in alertness system.
If you drink caffeine immediately, you blunt that cortisol peak. Over time, your body produces less morning cortisol and you become more dependent on caffeine. Waiting lets cortisol do its job, then you add caffeine on top for a smoother, longer-lasting energy curve.

Protocol 3: The physiological sigh

Cold exposure — a cold shower, ice bath, or even splashing cold water on your face — triggers a massive release of norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals increase alertness, focus, and mood for hours afterward.
